Staten Island is a borough of New York City, New York, that is coextensive with Richmond County. It is located off the coast of New Jersey and is the southernmost landmass in the State of New York. As of 2026, Staten Island has a population of 495,747 people, making it the least populated borough in all of New York City. It is also mostly suburban, with no skyscrapers on the island, unlike the other four boroughs of New York.

Staten Island has been part of New York City since the city’s consolidation in 1898. Prior to 1975, it was officially named the Brough of Richmond. Politically, Staten Island is the only borough of New York City that still votes Republican in federal, state, and local elections. The current borough president of Staten Island since 2021 is Vito Fossella. Also, Staten Island is mostly populated by Americans of Italian immigrant descent.
