West New York is a town in the northern region of Hudson County, New Jersey. It is located on the Hudson River Palisades, overlooking the skyline of Manhattan, New York. As of 2026, West New York has a population of 51,981 residents.
The town was incorporated in 1898. From then up until the 1960s, West New York was mostly inhabited by German and Italian immigrants. However, since the 1960s, the town of West New York has become a majority Hispanic city. Most of the city’s population as of today are the descendants of Cuban immigrants who fled to the city after Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba. As a result, West New York, along with the neighboring towns of Union City and Weehawken, have been given the nick name “Havana-on-the-Hudson”.
Most residents of West New York live in apartments in high rises that were built along Boulevard East. Most of these high rises were built in the 1980s on the sites of permanently closed textile mills. Some of these high rises are the tallest buildings within Hudson County between the cities of Fort Lee and Hoboken.
