Blagoveshchensk (Russian for “City of the Annunciation”) is the capital city of the Amur Oblast, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. As of 2025, Blagoveshchensk has a population of 225,453 residents living in its city limits.
The city is located at the confluence point of the Zeya and Amur Rivers. On the opposite side of the Amur River is the Chinese city of Hei-He. Together, the cities of Blagoveshchensk and Hei-He form the largest international metropolitan area between Russia and China. As such, the economy of Blagoveshchensk is dependent on international trade between the countries of China and Russia.
