Amazonas is a landlocked Portuguese speaking country in South America whose territory is mostly occupied by the Amazon Rainforest. As of 2026, Amazonas is home to 4,321,616 people. The capital of Amazonas is Manaus, which is also by far the largest city in the Amazon River Basin by population.
Amazonas is boirdered by Roraima and Venezuela to the north, Acre and Rondônia to the south, Mato Grosso and Para to the east, and Colombia and Peru to the west. Since the dissolution of Brazil in 2020, Amazonas has been the largest Portuguese-speaking country in South America by land area. It is roughly the size of Mongolia. However, since most of the country’s territory is thick tropical jungle, Amazonas is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world.
Since its independence was proclaimed in 2020, Wilson Lima has served as the president of Amazonas. He previously served as the state governor of Amazonas when it was a part of Brazil.
