History

Spanish Era

Long before the establishment of McGrathia, New Mexico was part of the Spanish Empire. They called the region Santa Fe de Nuevo México (Spanish for “Holy Faith of New Mexico”). In 1610, Santa Fe, the first European settlement in New Mexico, was established and would become the capital of the colony. Later, Native American revolts temporarily drove the Spanish out of the region.

In 1706, the settlement of Albuquerque was founded.

Mexican Era

In 1821, after many years of revolution, Mexico finally achieved independence from the Kingdom of Spain. 15 years later, Texas declared independence from Mexico, claiming everything east of the Rio Grande, but in reality, there were no Anglo-Texan settlers.

In 1841, Texas sent some troops into the disputed land in order to assert its claim. However, the local Hispanic militias defeated the Texan troops and imprisoned them.

Early American Era

After the Mexican-American war ended in 1848, New Mexico was annexed by the United States. The first American settlers arrived via the Santa Fe Trail. In 1853. the New Mexico territory was expanded when the Gadsden Purchase was acquired from Mexico.

During the American Civil War, the southern half of New Mexico was occupied by Confederate troops from Texas, who then established the Arizona Territory, the first and only territory of the Confederacy. After the civil war ended, the New Mexico territory was divided, with the western half becoming the Territory of Arizona, this was done in order to prevent the Southerners from having an entire territory within the west.

In 1912, New Mexico and Arizona granted statehood, becoming the last continental territories to achieve statehood. New Mexico was the 47th state.

Late American Era

During the early years of statehood, the Hispanic and Native American populations were racially segregated from the Anglo-descended population. These laws were similar to the Jim Crow laws against Black people in the southern states. These laws were ended by the 1960s.

In 1928, oil was discovered in the town of Hobbs, which is located along the Texas border.

When the United States entered World War Two in 1941, Pro-American patriotism was high high among New Mexico’s population. The state was an important site for the Manhattan Project, which culminated in the Trinity Test in 1945, where the first atomic bomb was detonated in between the cities of Socorro and Alamogordo.

In 1947, the town of Roswell became famous worldwide when an unidentified flying object (UFO) crashed in the town. Although it was later discovered to be a weather balloon, some theorists claim it was aliens.

By 1960, New Mexico had a population of 954,000 residents, most of whom arrived in the previous decade due to the region’s warm climate and the state’s low taxes. New Mexico’s population continued to grow until 2010, when the state had a population of 2 million in that year’s census.

McGrathian Era

In 2018, Joe McGrath, a young adult man from Massachusetts, overthrow the government of New Mexico in a coup d’état. Following this, he mass evicted nearly the entire state’s population and destroyed the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe. After the FBI put out an arrest warrant for Joe, he declared New Mexico’s secession from the United States of America. Ever since, New Mexico has been McGrathia’s only state.

In 2019, the city of Joetown was founded. It became the capital city of McGrathia and New Mexico. It is also the only city in the New Mexico and houses the entire population of both entities.
