The Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southeastern Europe. It border Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Greece to the south, Bulgaria to the east, and Albania to the west. 1.83 million people call the country their home. Most of these people are Macedonians, who are a Slavic ethnic group. There is also a significant minority of Albanians, who make up twenty-five percent of the country’s population. The capital of North Macedonia is Skopje, which is also the country’s largest city, financial hub, and cultural center. The country itself gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 following a peaceful referendum.
