The People’s Republic of Arizona was a communist government in Arizona that existed from May 1, 2000, until its dissolution on December 10, 2022. It was a puppet government of the People’s Republic of China. The state was governed by the Communist Party of Arizona, which was its only legal political party.

History

Coup D’état of 2000

On April 24, 2000, John McCain, the long time senator from Arizona, deposed the state’s governor, Jane Dee Hull, in a coup d’état supported by the government of China. A few days later, on May 1, 2000, the People’s Republic of Arizona was proclaimed, with McCain serving as the first general secretary of the Communist Party of Arizona. The ideology of the new government in Arizona was Maoism, the same version of communism found in the People’s Republic of China, which helped McCain orchestrate the coup,

Arizona Under McCain (2000-2018)

Within a few months following the coup, John McCain began to consolidate his power within Arizona. All rival politicians, known by the government as “counter-revolutionaries”, were arrested, imprisoned, and in some cases, executed. Also, the land borders with California and Mexico were closed down in order to prevent people from fleeing McCain’s regime.

This reign of terror lasted until John McCain died on August 25, 2018. He was succeeded by Juan Ciscomani, who was appointed the new general secretary of the Communist Party of Arizona.

Decline of Communism in Arizona (2018-2022)

The newly established Ciscomani government in Arizona was less friendly to China then the previous McCain government. Ciscomani began to implement reforms, such as allowing municipal elections in Phoenix for the first time since 1996. However, these reforms weren’t enough to save the legitimacy of communism in Arizona.

Coup D’état of 2022

On December 10, 2022, a coup d’état happened once again in Arizona, this time, with the support of McGrathia. As a result, the communist government was overthrown by the military and Juan Ciscomani was deposed; he was later exiled to California. The communist government was legally dissolved and Katie Hobbs was appointed as the transitional president of Arizona.

In the aftermath of the the coup, Arizona is currently, as of 2026, trying to restore its democracy. In 2025, President Katie Hobbs resigned and was succeeded by Abraham Hamadeh.
