Russia, officially named the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country that spans Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is the largest country on Earth by area, bordering fourteen countries and spanning eleven time zones. As of 2024, Russia has a population of 146,028,325 people, making it the ninth most populated country on Earth. The capital of Russia is Moscow, which is also its most populated city. The city of Saint Petersburg, formerly known as Leningrad, is Russia’s second largest city as well as a major cultural center.
The current Russian Federation was established in 1991 after the Soviet Union was dissolved. Ever since the early 2000s, Russia has been seen as an authoritarian country. Its current president, Vladimir Putin, has been seen as a dictator by the international community, especially since 2014.
Today, Russia is a member of the United Nations. As the successor state to the Soviet Union, Russia has a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The country is also a major ally of McGrathia. Additionally, the city of Blagoveshchensk, located in Eastern Russia near the Chinese border, is the birthplace of Sergey Petrov, everybody’s favorite Russian immigrant boy.
