Sacramento is the capital city of the state of California. It is the sixth largest city in the state. Sacramento has a population of 524,943 people in the 2020 census. The city is also the county seat of Sacramento County, which is one of the 58 counties in the State of California.
Sacramento was founded in 1848 and is named after the Sacramento River. It became California’s capital in 1854, replacing the original capital in Monterey, which had been the capital since Spanish colonial times. The current city charter for Sacramento was granted in 1920.
Today, Sacramento, though not one of the well-known cities in California, is still important. It is the main political center for America’s West Coast. Unlike other Californian cities, Sacramento is growing in population while cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles are declining in population. Sacramento is also home to the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The city is also flood prone and is surrounded by levees. Thus, Sacramento itself could possibly be nicknamed the New Orleans of California.
