Goshen was a short-lived Dutch-speaking country in southern Africa that was governed as a republic. It existed from 1882 until 1883, when it was conquered by the British Empire and amde part of the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland.

History

In 1882, Dutch settler known as Boers migrated into the lands of the Tswana tribe of Indigenous Africans. This resulted in a war with the Tswana tribe, which ended in a Boer victory following the capture of the town of Mafikeng.

On October 24, 1882, the Republic of Goshen was established by the Boers. The country was named after the biblical Land of Goshen found in the Book of Genesis. Mercenary commander Nicholas Claudius van Pittius was proclaimed to be the president of the newly-established country.

The new country was immediately at risk of being destroyed. Goshen was located between the British Cape Colony and the Boer state of Transvaal. Finally, on August 6, 1883, the Republic of Goshen was annexed by the British, becoming the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

The Bechuanaland Protectorate would continue until 1895, when it was absorbed into the Cape Colony, which intern united with other British colonies in the region to from the Union of South Africa in 1910.

Flag

The flag of Goshen consisted of a tricolor flag of black, white, and red, with a green bar attached to the hoist side. The black, white, and red were derived from the contemporary flag of Germany. The prevent confusion with Germany, the flag of Goshen has a green bar attached to the stripes.
