“A Day Without Sergey” is the sixth episode of the McGrathian TV show Second Chances. In this episode, Sergey is sick and cannot help at the community center, forcing Michael to work by himself. The episode premiered on October 22, 2025, at the 5:00 p.m. timeslot.
Script
INTERIOR: SERGEY’S HOUSE – MORNING
Sergey lies in bed wrapped late a burrito in blankets. His nose is red and his eyes are droopy. His mom puts a thermometer in his mouth.
MOM
You’re not going anywhere today.
Sergey groans.
SERGEY
But I promised– I have tutoring– I have shifts– I have–
Mom then gently presses him back into the pillow
MOM
You also have a fever that could melt ice.
She hands him his phone
MOM
Call Michael
Sergey reluctantly taps his screen.
CUT TO INTERIOR: MICHAEL’S KITCHEN
Michael answers while eating cereal strait out of the box
MICHAEL
Dude! Big day, Ms. Harland said we’re organizing the supply closet again.
(beat)
Wait….. why do you sound like a dying robot?
SERGEY (Voiceover, stuffy)
I’m sick. I can’t come in.
Michael freezes
MICHAEL
You’re WHAT?
TITLE CARD
INTERIOR: COMMUNITY CENTER – LOBBY
Michael arrives alone for the first time ever.
Ms. Harland meets him, smiling warmly.
MS. HARLAND
Michael! you’re solo today I hear.
MICHAEL
Yeah. Sergey’s sick. Fever. No voice. Looks like a sleepy tomato.
MS. HARLAND
Well, you can handle today on your own, right?
Michael nods too quickly.
MICHAEL
Absolutely! One hundred percent! Easy!
She leaves. Michael exhales in panic.
INTERIOR: COMMUNITY CENTER – SUPPLY CLOSET
The place is a disaster again:
Unlabeled bins, paint cans, extension cords, sports balls, random holiday decorations.
MICHAEL (to himself)
Okay. Breathe. You can do this. Sergey does it all the time
He rolls up his sleeves…..accidentally knock over a tower of boxes.
MICHAEL
Okay. So far: terrible.
NEW CHARACTERS INTRODUCED:
- TARA (12)
- OMAR (15)
Tara bounces into the room.
TARA
Hey! What are we doing toady? Breaking stuff?
MICHAEL
NO! Definitely not!
(beat)
Only if its happens on by accident.
Omar enters behind her
OMAR
Ms. Harland said you needed help.
Michael looks relieved.
MICHAEL
Yes. Yes I do. Desperately.
INTERIOR: COMMUNITY CENTER – SUPPLY CLOSEST – LATER
Michael, Tara, and Omar attempt to sort items.
Michael tries to act “in charge,” but is flustered
Attempt 1: Chaos
Tara run around wildly stacking things in the wrong places.
TARA
Sports tuff goes with with sports stuff
(she throws a volleyball into a bin of extension cords)
MICHAEL
That’s… not sports stuff!
Attempt 2: Over-Organizing
Omar starts creating an elaborate labeling system.
OMAR
These labels are color coded by item type, frequency of use, and emotional importance
MICHAEL
Emotional… what?
Attempt 3: Total Collapse
Michael tries to lift a heavy bin, slips, and dumps everything onto the floor.
MICHAEL
Okay, That’s fine! I’m fine! Everything’s fine!
Tara and Omar exchange looks.
INTERIOR: COMMUNITY CENTER – HALLWAY
Michael steps out, overwhelmed.
He pulls out his phone and texts Sergey.
MICHAEL: Bro help
MICHAEL: Closet is a monster
MICHAEL: Omar is organizing emotions
MICHAEL: Tara nearly knocked over the broom wall
MICHAEL: I can’t do this
Sergey responds slowly
SERGEY: U got this
SERGEY: Just breath.
SERGEY: Brath
MICHAEL: You mean “breathe”?
SERGEY: Sick
MICHAEL: Right
Michael smiles despite himself.
IMTERIOR: SUPPLY CLOSET – MOMENTS LATER
He walks back in with renewed determination
MICHAEL
Okay team! New plan.
We organize but SIMPLE.
Three categories:
Sport. Art. Everything Else
TARA
Ooooh. I like “Everything Else.” Its mysterious.
OMAR
This system… is not illogical.
MONTAGE
- Michael gently directs Tara: “No, that’s art. That’s also art. Tara, stop juggling paint bottles.”
- Omar and Michael work together labeling supply bins
- Tara helps Michael stack boxes (by not standing on them).
- Michael takes leadership confidently for the first time.
- Sergey texts encouragement from home, wrapped in two blankets and a scarf.
INTERIOR: COMMUNITY CENTER – SUPLLY CLOSET – FINISHED
The closet is surprisingly neat.
Tara high-fives everyone.
Omar smiles.
TARA
This looks awesome!
OMAR
I admit, simple categorization has advantages.
Michael beams.
MICHAEL
We did it. Without Sergey.
He suddenly fells the weight of that.
INTERIOR: SERGEY’S HOUSE – EVENING
Michael arrives at Sergey’s door with a bag of supplies:
Soup, tissues, and a small sign that reads:
“BEST CO-LEADER EVER (EVEN WHILE DYING)“
Sergey opens the door slowly, bundled in blankets like a penguin.
MICHAEL
You should’ve seen me today!
I organized, I delegated.
I didn’t even get electrocuted once!
Sergey gives a weak thumbs up.
SERGEY
Proud of you.
(sneeze)
Very tired now.
Michael smiles.
MICHAEL
Get better soon. I need my partner.
Sergey nods and shuffles back inside.
Michael heads off on his bike.
EXTERIOR: SERGEY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Michael rides away triumphantly.
MICHAEL (Voiceover)
Today… I actually did okay.
