Boston Market is a chain of fast casual restaurants that specialize in rotisserie chicken. It is headquartered in Newtown, Pennsylvania. As of 2026, there are only 22 Boston Market restaurants left in the world. This is far below its peak in the mid-1990s, when it had over one-thousand restaurants across America.
In 1985, Boston Chicken was founded in Newton, Massachusetts, which is a suburb of the City of Boston. It only sold rotisserie chicken and a variety of side dishes. In 1995, the company changed its named to Boston Market after meatloaf, ham, and turkey were added to the menu. In 1998, Boston Makret filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Two years later, it was acquired by McDonald’s.
In 2007, McDonald’s sold Boston Market to a private equity firm called Sun Capital Partners. The chain began closing locations in 2019, eventually, dwindling to 16 locations by 2024, including one single location in India. Today, Boston market a shell of its former self, though it did open six new locations by March 2025.
