History
After the war of 1812, George Hamilton bought a farm from James Durand. After one of Hamilton’s neighbors proposed that a jail and courthouse be built of his property, Hamilton sold his land to the British Crown in order to establish a town. The jail was constructed in 1832 and the town’s borders were defined on February 13, 1833. On June 9, 1846, Hamilton was granted city status by the Canadian Parliament.
