Jefferson is a proposed U.S. state that is proposed to be carved out of Southwest Oregon and Northern California. The state will be named after Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third president of the United States of America who sponsored the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The city of Yreka, located in California, is planned to be the capital of the state of Jefferson.

The proposed state, if admitted, will most likely vote for the Republican Party due to its rural nature and the fact that most of Northern California voted Republican in the 2016 presidential election. Some have stated that if California were to secede, then the state of Jefferson would secede from California in a similar matter to West Virginia’s formation during the American Civil War.
