Montevideo is the capital of and largest city in the South American country of Uruguay. As of the 2011 Uruguayan Census, Montevideo has a population of 1.3 million. Founded in 1726 by the Spanish, it was founded as a military fortress against Portuguese invaders from Brazil. Today, Montevideo has become the diplomatic center of South America, often being compared to Brussels.
