6th of October City is a city in the Giza Governorate of Egypt. As of 2026, 6th of October City is home to a population of 376,302 residents. It is a part of the Cairo metropolitan area and is eleven miles west of the Pyramids of Giza.
It was founded by the Egyptian government in 1979 as a suburb of Cairo. The city’s name is a reference to October 6, 1973, which the day that Egypt began to invade Israel as a way to liberate the Sinai Peninsula. The city itself was founded on the six-year anniversary of the war. In 2008, the Egyptian government created the 6th of October Governorate after partitioning the Giza Governorate. This decision was reversed in 2011 in the aftermath of the Egyptian Revolution. This resulted in 6th of October City once again being part of the Giza Governorate.
Today, 6th of October City is home to most of Egypt’s international schools as well as a tech park. It is also home to an IKEA furniture store and the regional factory for General Motors in Egypt.
