Michigan is a state in the Midwestern United States. It borders Wisconsin to the west, Ohio and Indiana to the south, and Canada to the north and east. As of 2025, Michigan has a population of 10.14 million people, making its the 10th most populated state in the United States. The capital of Michigan is Lansing, while the city of Detroit, located in Southeastern Michigan, is the state’s largest city.

Michigan’s total area is 96,716, making it the 11th largest US State and the largest state east of the Mississippi River if water is included. The state is dived among two peninsulas; the densely-populated Lower Peninsula and the forested Upper Peninsula. Both peninsulas are linked by a bridge that crosses the Mackinac Strait.

Michigan was once the center of the American automobile industry. The Big Three automakers; Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler, were headquartered in and made their vehicles in the state. After foreign-made cars arrived, Michigan’s place in auto manufacturing dwindled. Today, the state’s economy diversified to include services, high-tech, agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, mining, and tourism.
