John Kevin Delaney (Born April 16, 1963) is an American politician, businessman, and former attorney from Maryland. He served as the United States representative from the 6th Congressional District of Maryland from 2013 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, Delaney ran for president in the 2020 Election with the Democratic Party, but suspended his campaign and endorsed Joe Biden.
Early Life
John Delaney was born in Wood Ridge, New Jersey, on April 16, 1963, to a Catholic family of Irish descent. He graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in 1981, later attending Columbia University until 1985. Delaney also attended Georgetown University Law Center, graduating with a J.D. in 1988.
Business Career
In 2000, Delaney co-founded Capital Source, a commercial lender that is based out of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Capital Source was acquired by PacWest Bancorp in 2014.
Congressional Career
In 2012, Delaney ran for the United States House of Representatives for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. Delaney won and would assumed office in 2013. Delaney was subsequently re-elected in both 2014 and 2016. During his time in Congress, Delaney was a member of the Financial Service Committee.
2020 Presidential Campaign
In 2017, Delaney became the first person to announce a presidential bid for the 2020 election. In 2018, Delaney retired from the House of Representatives in order to focus on his presidential campaign.
On January 31, 2020, Delaney suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed former vice president Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination.
Personal Life
John Delany is married with his wife, April McClain, who he met in law school in 1989. Delaney and his family currently live in Potomac, Maryland.
